Andrew Murray (1828–1917) was a South African pastor and writer in the Dutch Reformed Church. Educated in Scotland and the Netherlands, he served congregations at Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington, and was six times moderator of his church. Murray wrote some 240 books on prayer and the deeper Christian life; our library holds Abide in Christ, With Christ in the School of Prayer, Absolute Surrender, and The Prayer Life.

Murray explores the cross as both Christ’s redemption of sinners and the believer’s fellowship in His death, drawing on Paul’s words, “I have been crucified with Christ,” and Jesus’ calls to deny oneself and follow Him. The readings invite Christians to die to sin, self-will, and the world, and to live by the Spirit in Christlike love, sacrifice, and obedience.
