Andrew Murray (1828–1917) was a South African pastor and writer in the Dutch Reformed Church. Educated in Scotland and the Netherlands, he served congregations at Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington, and was six times moderator of his church. Murray wrote some 240 books on prayer and the deeper Christian life; our library holds Abide in Christ, With Christ in the School of Prayer, Absolute Surrender, and The Prayer Life.

Murray treats prayerlessness as sin and urges Christians to seek deliverance through God’s grace, cultivating persevering prayer, obedience, and fellowship with the Father. Opening with the personal confession of prayerlessness, he draws on the examples of Jesus, Paul, George Müller, and Hudson Taylor, and links the life of prayer with Scripture, the Holy Spirit, and taking up the cross.
