The Necessity of Prayer

The Necessity of Prayer

Edward McKendree Bounds (1835–1913) was an American Methodist minister and author. A lawyer turned preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, he served as a Confederate chaplain during the Civil War and afterward pastored churches in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. Bounds rose at half past four each morning to pray, and nearly all his books — Power Through Prayer and eight more on prayer, most in our library — appeared after his death.

About this book

Bounds examines prayer through its ties to faith, trust, desire, fervency, persistence, character, obedience, vigilance, Scripture, and worship. Opening with Christ’s teaching that people ought always to pray and not lose heart, he calls Christians to wholehearted, persistent prayer shaped by holy lives, attentive to God’s Word, and central in the church and its work.
